As always, IWHALE uses storytelling to present theory, and Little Mike's journey into digital marketing is no exception. Here, Little Mike is a beginner in the world of digital marketing, trying to learn how to make his website shine on search engines like Google. Learn all about Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Let's dive in with him!
Little Mike had just launched his very first online shop where he sold amazing homemade hats. He was excited, but when he searched for “cool hats” online, he couldn’t find his shop anywhere. It felt like his store was hidden in the deep ocean, and no one could see it! This is when Mike’s friend, Lin, mentioned SEO — a way to make sure people could find his store on search engines like Google. Intrigued, Mike decided to learn all about it.
Lin told Mike, “SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It’s a way to help your website show up when people search for things like ‘cool hats’. It’s like putting a big, shining sign outside your shop that says ‘Look, we’re here!'”
Mike learned that search engines like Google have little helpers called crawlers that go through websites to learn what they’re all about. These crawlers help decide which websites should show up when people search for something. “So,” Mike thought, “if I help these crawlers understand my shop, they can show it to people who want hats!”
Lin told Little Mike about keywords. “Keywords are like clues,” Lin explained. “If someone types ‘homemade hats’ into Google, your website should say ‘homemade hats’ enough times to show that you’re all about those.” Mike understood that he needed to pick the right keywords that described his hats. He started by making a list of words that people might use to search for hats: “cool hats”, “handmade hats”, and “colorful beanies”.
Mike learned that it’s important to put these keywords in smart places on his website: in the titles, headings, and throughout the text, but not too much! “If you overdo it, the crawlers think you’re trying to trick them,” Lin said. “That’s called keyword stuffing, and it’s not good.”
Mike decided to add a section to his website called “The Story of Mike’s Hats” where he shared how each hat was made. He made sure to use his keywords naturally, like “Every one of Mike’s handmade hats is made with love, perfect for anyone looking for a cool hat.” This way, Mike’s keywords were part of his story, making his website fun for both people and search engines.
Mike learned that search engines like Google love quality content. This means writing things that people actually find helpful or entertaining. Mike’s stories made people smile, and Lin explained that happy visitors spend more time on the website, which makes Google think, “This is a good site! Let’s show it to more people!”
Lin then introduced Mike to links. “Links are like roads that connect different places on the web,” Lin said. “You want other websites to link to your site. It’s like if popular hat bloggers talk about you, it tells Google, ‘Hey, this shop must be pretty great!'”
Mike decided to reach out to a few bloggers who liked handmade things. He sent them some of his best hats and asked if they could write about them. Soon, his hats were featured on their blogs, and each post included a link to Mike’s shop. These backlinks helped Google realize that Mike’s hat shop was worth showing to people.
Mike also learned about something called on-page SEO. “This is when you make each page on your website easy for both visitors and crawlers to understand,” Lin said. Mike added titles to all his pages, like “Mike’s Handmade Hats – Colorful Beanies and Cool Designs.” He also made sure that each image had an alt text — a description that tells Google what the picture shows. For example, the photo of a red hat was labeled “Handmade red beanie hat by Mike.”
One day, Lin visited Mike’s website on her phone and noticed it was hard to read. “Mike, did you know that lots of people shop on their phones? Your website needs to be mobile-friendly!” Lin said. Mike worked on making his shop easy to use on smaller screens, so now people could easily see his hats while on the go.
After doing all these things, Mike asked Lin, “When will my site show up on the first page of Google?” Lin smiled, “SEO takes time, Mike. Think of it like planting seeds. You’ve done the work, now you have to let it grow. Keep adding good content, keep reaching out for links, and soon, you’ll see the results.”
Mike waited, and slowly but surely, his website started climbing up the search results. One day, when Mike searched for “cool hats,” his shop was right there on the first page! Mike was thrilled — his hard work had paid off.
Just like Little Mike, anyone can learn SEO step by step. It might seem complicated at first, but with patience and practice, it becomes a fun challenge. Remember to pick the right keywords, tell a good story, connect with others through links, and make sure your website is easy to use. SEO is all about making sure your shop isn’t hidden, but instead, shining bright for everyone to see!
If you’re ready to help your website shine, start with these simple steps, and soon, you’ll see people discovering what you have to offer, just like Mike and his hats.
